Description
Will The Man Get Frog is a semi-random writing game in which you compose haikus (japanese short poems) in a cute and soothing atmosphere. Carefully crafted constraints will help you be creative regardless of your writing skills. The minimal design gives you space to focus, explore and express yourself. No achievements, no scoring, no leaderboard. It's about you and the words spending quality time together. When you're finished, record and share a .gif of your creation!
History
The idea for a DIY poetry game based on random word-picking occurred because of two past experiences: participating in a writing workshop, and playing with word magnets on a fridge.
A first prototype in French was made during a COVID lockdown, but felt too complex to play. Years later, for a game jam, a simpler, more playful and intuitive approach was tried. The design was reframed to 5-7-5 haikus and one-syllable English words only. Will The Man Get Frog was born!
People loved sharing haiku gifs in the game page's comments. MarechalBanane decided to take a few months to put more effort and content into the game. A UK-based designer and artist named C.Diffin joined the project to make a nice, relaxing soundtrack for the game.
The game came out on Steam on February 14th for free, to showcase the work of the developers. The reception is pretty good: A 98% "Very Positive" user score, 50+ reviews, and haikus from all over the world published in the community hub! A DLC containing the OST is also available for 1.99$ to help support the devs.
